A torque converter is a device used in an automatic transmission vehicle for transmitting the motive force of the engine to the transmission. The torque converter performs the following important roles that help enhance the driving performance and improve fuel economy.
Transmission of torque The transmission is an automobile component that transfers the driving force from the engine to the wheels. This is necessary for the car to run efficiently. It smoothly transmits engine torque to the transmission.
Amplification of engine torque When a large amount of torque is required at startup or acceleration, it amplifies and transmits engine torque to the transmission.
Reduction of vibrations By means of a damper it attenuates vibrations generated by the engine and improves quietness inside the vehicle. (When directly connected with the lock-up clutch engaged)
| Mounting position
The torque converter is located between the engine and the transmission. Designed to fit into the restricted space of the engine compartment, Yutaka’s compact, lightweight and high-performance torque converters are becoming increasingly important.
| Structure
The torque converter consists of three main parts. These are the pump, which is turned directly by the motive force of the engine, the turbine, which receives that force by means of oil and transmits it to the transmission, and the stator, which controls the torque amplification function. From the outside, its shape is similar to that of a doughnut, and the interior is filled with a special oil. Each part is equipped with vane-like blades, and it is by rotating these vanes within the oil that motive force is transmitted. The torque converter also contains a lock-up clutch, which forces a direct coupling of rotating parts between the engine and the transmission, and a damper that reduces vibrations from the engine.
